Oodi Central Library

Wave-roofed central library of 2018, one of the best public buildings in Europe

The flagship of Helsinki's central library system, opposite the Parliament Building. The undulating timber-and-glass volume by ALA Architects is built like an upside-down ship — a steel arch spanning 100 metres lifts the roof clear of internal columns, so the top-floor reading room is a single column-free space looking out over Töölö Bay and the city.

Beyond the books, there is a recording studio, a small cinema, a gaming room, and free spaces for cooking, sewing, and 3D-printing. The ground floor café is open late. Helsinki's most genuinely civic building and worth visiting even if you do not pick up a book.

A story
Oodi opened in 2018 to mark the centenary of Finnish independence. It contains far fewer books than a building of its size could hold — most of the space is given over to meeting rooms, recording studios, sewing machines, 3D printers, and the simple act of sitting somewhere warm.
