Löyly

Architect-designed public sauna with a wood deck for the post-sauna sea plunge

A modern public sauna by Avanto Architects, on the Eira shore south of the centre. The cedar-clad volume tapers down to the water, with a wide deck where bathers dry off, drink beer, and — between sauna sessions — descend a ladder into the Baltic. Three saunas inside: an electric, a wood-fired smoke sauna, and a continuously heated one. Swimsuit required (it is a mixed sauna).

Book a slot in advance, especially in winter, when ice-hole swimming season makes Löyly an event in itself. The on-site restaurant is good. Tram 6 to Eiranranta or a 25-minute walk south from the centre along the shore.

A story
Löyly opened in 2016 as part of a deliberate push by the city to revive Helsinki's public sauna culture, which had declined as private flats added their own. It now anchors a chain of new public saunas along the southern shore — Allas, Sompasauna, Kuura — that have made sauna day-trips a serious part of city life.
