Central Railway Station

Eliel Saarinen's 1919 national-romantic landmark, granite torch-bearers and all

Helsinki Central Station, completed in 1919 to Eliel Saarinen's competition-winning design. The transitional national-romantic style — heavy red granite, a clock tower, vaulted halls — was a deliberate move away from the neoclassicism of the previous generation toward something distinctively Finnish. Saarinen later won the second prize at the Chicago Tribune competition for a similar tower; the station design influenced a generation of American skyscrapers.

The station is still the main hub for VR's domestic services and the airport train. Walk in, look up at the vaulted main hall, and admire the four granite figures flanking the main entrance. The basement holds the metro station; the eastern side has a Burger King in a former lounge.

A story
The four granite figures flanking the entrance — two on each side, holding globe lamps — were sculpted by Emil Wikström in 1914 and became one of the most parodied images in Finland. They have appeared in countless cartoons, beer advertisements, and at least one Pixar film.
