Parliament House

Finland's parliament, a 1931 essay in red granite stripped classicism

The Finnish Eduskunta, on the long axis of Mannerheimintie. Designed by Johan Sigfrid Sirén and finished in 1931, the building is the major monument of Finnish interwar classicism — fourteen-metre red-granite columns across the front, a sober, almost severe interior. Guided tours run on Saturdays and on selected weekday afternoons (book ahead in summer); the rest of the time you admire it from outside.

Combine with neighbouring Oodi library and the Kiasma museum — three generations of Finnish public architecture lined up on a single block.
