A UNESCO-listed sea fortress spread across six linked islands at the mouth of Helsinki's harbour. Built by Sweden in the 1740s to defend the eastern Baltic against Russia (it failed — Russia took it in 1808), Suomenlinna is the largest construction of its kind in Europe. The islands are a 15-minute ferry ride from Market Square and now hold a handful of small museums, a dry dock with visiting tall ships, grass-topped ramparts to walk, and about 800 permanent residents. Half a day is right; a full day in summer is better.
