Seurasaari Open-Air Museum

Wooden buildings from across Finland reassembled on a forested island

An island three kilometres west of the centre, linked to the mainland by a wooden footbridge, given over to an open-air museum of historic Finnish buildings. Farms, log houses, churches, windmills, and a working manor have been relocated here from across the country since 1909. In summer, costumed guides demonstrate weaving, baking, and crofting; in winter the buildings are closed but the island remains a popular walking destination.

The island is also wooded enough to feel rural, with a small beach and tame red squirrels that will accept hazelnuts from your hand. Tram 4 from the centre to the Meilahti stop, then a short walk; or bus 24.

A story
The midsummer bonfires on Seurasaari, lit every year on the eve of Juhannus, are the oldest continuously held public celebration in Helsinki. Tens of thousands pack the island shore to watch the fires reflected on the water — the high point of the Finnish summer.
