Hietaniemi Beach

The city centre beach, packed on any warm summer afternoon

Helsinki's main city-centre beach, on the northwest side of the peninsula opposite the Lauttasaari bridge. A long arc of sand backed by a grass park, with volleyball courts, a beach café, and a Hietsu paviljonki bar at the back. On a warm summer weekend the entire grass is taken; on a cooler day you can find a quiet patch.

The water is the Baltic — not warm, but tolerable in July and August. Swimming season runs roughly mid-June to late August. Tram 8 from the centre or about 25 minutes on foot through the Töölö district.
