Kamppi Chapel

A pure quiet space in spruce and ash, in the middle of a shopping district

A small Lutheran chapel by K2S Architects, completed in 2012 on the edge of Narinkkatori square, the busiest pedestrian crossing in Helsinki. Built entirely from curved spruce planks on the outside and waxed ash inside, it has no windows in the wall — light enters only from a band high overhead — and no services beyond an occasional baptism. The point is the silence.

Free to enter, open every day. Five minutes is enough; the contrast between the chapel's quiet and Narinkkatori's bustle is the whole experience. Step in, sit down, then go back out into the shopping district.
