Santa Maria in Aracoeli crowns the Capitoline Hill, above the long stairway beside Piazza Venezia. The plain brick and stone exterior gives little away, but inside the church opens into a richly decorated, almost ballroom-like space.
It is an easy add-on to the Capitoline Museums or the Forum. Step inside for the painted ceiling, side chapels and the sudden quiet above one of Rome's busiest corners.
