A Baroque Jesuit church from 1722 with one of the most remarkable painted ceilings in Rome. The local residents refused to fund a dome, so the painter Andrea Pozzo instead painted a trompe l'oeil ceiling fresco that creates the illusion of a dome and soaring architecture. Stand on the yellow disc marked on the nave floor for the full effect — from anywhere else the perspective collapses.
The surrounding Piazza di Sant'Ignazio, designed by Filippo Raguzzini in 1727, is a rococo stage-set of curved facades and is itself worth pausing in. Two minutes from the Pantheon.
