Bellu Cemetery

Romania's most important cemetery, with the graves of national poets and writers

Address Calea Șerban Vodă 249, Bucharest

The most important cemetery in Romania, opened in 1858 and laid out as a 19th-century necropolis of avenues, family chapels, and grand mausolea. Almost every name in the Romanian artistic and intellectual canon is buried here — the poet Mihai Eminescu, the playwright I. L. Caragiale, the storyteller Ion Creangă, the painter Theodor Aman, the composer George Enescu — and many of the family vaults are themselves remarkable pieces of sculpture and architecture.

The Writers' Alley near the entrance gathers the literary graves and is the easiest way to see the highlights in under an hour. The cemetery is open daily and free to enter; bring a city map of the site (available at the gate) to find specific graves. A short metro ride from the centre to Eroii Revoluției.
