National Cathedral of Romania

Vast new Orthodox cathedral, largest in southeastern Europe

Address Dealul Arsenalului, Bucharest

A vast Orthodox cathedral begun in 2010 and still being completed at the time of writing, rising on the slope above the Palace of the Parliament. When finished it will be the largest Orthodox church in the world by volume, with a main dome reaching 135 metres and a bell tower carrying the heaviest functioning church bell ever cast.

The cathedral is divisive — many Romanians think the money should have gone elsewhere, and the modern Brâncovenesc-style architecture is hit or miss — but the sheer scale is undeniable. It was consecrated in 2018 and partial interior tours are sometimes possible. Pair a visit with the Palace of the Parliament next door for a study in two contrasting Romanian visions of monumentality.
