Colțea Church

1702 church next to the city's oldest hospital

Address Bulevardul I. C. Brătianu 1, Bucharest

A small Wallachian church from 1702, founded by the great boyar Mihai Cantacuzino and standing beside Colțea Hospital, the oldest in Bucharest. The carved stone door frame and twisted columns of the porch are typical Brâncovenesc craftsmanship; the interior frescoes were repainted in the 19th century but retain their original layout.

Until the 1880s, the church was attached to a massive watchtower called Turnul Colței, the tallest building in the city; the tower was eventually demolished as a fire hazard. The church alone survives, dwarfed now by the surrounding apartment blocks. A two-minute stop while walking from University Square south into the Old Centre.
