A 25-metre marble obelisk pierced by a basket-like sculpture, erected in 2005 to honour those killed in the December 1989 revolution. Locals were so unimpressed they nicknamed it "the potato on a skewer" (cartoful pe țeapă), and the memorial has been vandalised with red paint several times — most prominently in 2012 when a protester sprayed it to look like blood was flowing from the basket.
It is a strange and not entirely successful monument, but it sits at the centre of the most important square in modern Romanian history and is hard to avoid. The plaque at the base lists the names of revolution victims; the surrounding paving stones bear inscriptions from December 1989.
