Snagov Monastery

Island monastery 40 km north, traditional burial place of Vlad the Impaler

Address Snagov Island, Snagov Lake

A small 15th-century Orthodox monastery on an island in Snagov Lake, 40 km north of Bucharest. The current church dates from 1521 and replaced an earlier building destroyed by the Tatars. The interior frescoes — sooty, dim, partly damaged — are among the oldest surviving in Wallachia, and the stone slab in front of the altar is the legendary burial place of Vlad Țepeș.

In summer a small motor boat shuttles visitors across the narrow channel from the village; in winter the lake sometimes freezes and you walk across. The trip is a peaceful escape from Bucharest and a half-day total from the city centre. Snagov village has a couple of basic restaurants where you can eat fresh fish.

A story
Local tradition holds that Vlad Țepeș was buried here in 1476 after being killed in battle against the Ottomans. When his supposed tomb was opened in 1933 it contained only animal bones and bits of pottery. Romanian historians still argue about where Vlad's body actually went.
