Every July, Chueca becomes the centre of one of the largest Pride celebrations in the world. Madrid's Orgullo draws upwards of two million people to the neighbourhood over eight or nine days, with the main parade on the first Saturday of July running from Atocha through Chueca and back. The scale is extraordinary: streets closed for days, temporary stages throughout the neighbourhood, continuous outdoor partying.
Outside the festival week, Chueca functions as Madrid's established LGBT neighbourhood with a permanent concentration of gay-friendly bars, clubs, and shops. The area is welcoming year-round; the Pride event is simply when it becomes internationally visible. If you are not specifically coming for Pride, early July is also one of the more chaotic times to visit central Madrid. Metro Chueca.
