The largest dome in Spain after Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence, and the third-largest brick dome in any Christian church anywhere — 33 metres across, 56 metres high. The basilica was built between 1761 and 1784 on the site of a Franciscan monastery supposedly founded by St. Francis of Assisi himself.
The interior is enormous, restrained on first impression, and packed with 19th-century history paintings on a colossal scale — Goya's St Bernardino of Siena in the Capilla de San Bernardino is the most famous, a fairly modest early work in this case. The dome is decorated with frescoes by Casto Plasencia. Entry is by paid guided tour (€5), included in which is a peek into the impressive vestments room. Allow 45 minutes. Closed on Sundays except for services.
