The neighbourhood food market of Salamanca, on Calle Ayala, operating since 1882 and substantially less touristy than either San Miguel or San Antón. The Mercado de la Paz functions as a working market for the residents of one of Madrid's wealthiest districts, which means the produce and specialty food stalls are of extremely high quality.
The fish counter is particularly well-regarded. The building is covered cast-iron market architecture from the late 19th century; the market has been renovated without becoming a food-hall tourist trap. Good for buying food to take away or for a quick lunch at one of the stalls. Calle Ayala 28. Metro Serrano.
