A former tobacco factory and now one of Madrid's most creative alternative cultural spaces, Tabacalera occupies a large 18th-century industrial building on Calle Embajadores. Parts are managed as a self-organised arts centre where local collectives run workshops, exhibitions, performances, and parties; a section managed by the Culture Ministry holds formal exhibitions.
The contrast between the formally curated and the chaotic self-organised sections is half the point of a visit. The building itself is remarkable — the scale of it, the surviving industrial fittings, the painted murals throughout. Open most afternoons except Monday; check the programme at tabacalera.eu.
