Church of Saint Anthony of the Germans

Oval Baroque church from 1633–1699 built for the German community, ceiling frescoed by Luca Giordano

A remarkable oval Baroque church on Calle Hortaleza built between 1633 and 1699 for the German community in Madrid. The entire interior is covered with an extraordinary ceiling fresco cycle by Francisco Ricci and Juan Carreño de Miranda depicting the life of Saint Anthony of Padua — one of the finest examples of illusionistic ceiling painting in Madrid.

The church has a special connection to the San Antonio Fiesta (June 13th), when single women traditionally come to pray for a husband — an old custom that has turned into a festive street celebration in the surrounding Chueca streets. Free entry. Metro Noviciado or Chueca.
