The Debod Temple

Ancient Egyptian temple transplanted to a Madrid hilltop

This Egyptian temple dates from the fourth century BC and originally stood near Aswan. When the rising waters behind the Aswan Dam threatened it, Spain helped with the international rescue effort, and Egypt donated the temple in gratitude in 1968. It was rebuilt stone by stone in the Parque del Oeste, on a hilltop near the Plaza de España.

The temple is small — just a gateway and two chambers — but it is genuine, and the setting is striking. The reflecting pool in front doubles the image at sunset, making this one of Madrid's best spots to watch the day end. Inside, the carvings and reliefs are modest compared to what you would see in Egypt, but the fact that they exist here at all is remarkable.

Free entry; closed Mondays.
