Spain's national film archive and repertory cinema, located in the Cine Doré on Calle Santa Isabel — a beautiful 1923 Modernista cinema building with a pretty tiled façade. The Filmoteca screens four or five films per day from its archive of classic, international, and Spanish cinema at subsidised prices (around €3-4 per film). Programmes rotate weekly, spanning silent film, world cinema, retrospectives, and restoration premieres.
The building has a pleasant café-bar on the ground floor open to non-film-goers. This is where Madrid's film culture happens: serious programming, excellent picture quality, no adverts, and an audience that actually watches rather than scrolls. Metro Antón Martín.
