La Tabacalera

Former state tobacco factory on Calle Embajadores turned free-entry alternative arts and community space

A former state tobacco factory on Calle Embajadores that has become one of Madrid's most interesting cultural venues since its conversion into an autonomous community art space. The vast industrial building hosts rotating exhibitions of contemporary and street art, music events, theatre, markets, and workshops — all free and almost entirely community-organised.

The interior murals alone make a visit worthwhile: the artists who have painted here include some of the most prominent names in European urban art. Programming changes constantly; check social media for current events. The atmosphere is deliberately unglamorous and anti-commercial. Metro Lavapiés or Embajadores.

A story
La Tabacalera was Madrid's state tobacco factory until 2000, when it closed. After years of abandonment, the building was ceded to the Ministry of Culture, which converted part of it into an autonomous cultural space managed by the surrounding community rather than state institutions.
