Plaza de la Paja

Finest medieval square in Madrid — an irregular sloping space that was the commercial centre of the old city

The finest medieval square in Madrid — a sloping, irregularly shaped space that was the commercial and civic heart of the city before Habsburg construction shifted everything eastward. The square is ringed by some of the oldest buildings in the capital: the Chapel of the Bishop (Capilla del Obispo), the church of San Andrés, and the garden of the Prince of Anglona, all dating from the 15th and 16th centuries.

The plaza itself is pleasantly low-key — a few bars with tables outside, children playing, and an atmosphere far quieter than the nearby tourist streets. On summer evenings it fills for the terrace bar scene around Delic, a good spot for a drink or coffee. The garden of the Prince of Anglona (free, seasonal hours) is the only surviving aristocratic garden from the medieval city. Metro La Latina.
