Birkenhead Park is one of the most important public parks in Britain. Opened in 1847 and designed by Joseph Paxton, it was the first publicly funded civic park in the country and later influenced Frederick Law Olmsted's design for Central Park in New York.
The park is worth a Wirral-side detour for its lakes, bridges, lodges, and planned landscape rather than for any single monument. It pairs well with the Mersey Ferry or Port Sunlight.
