Pier Head

Waterfront promenade with the Three Graces — Liverpool's iconic skyline

Address Pier Head, Liverpool, L3 1HN

The most photographed stretch of waterfront in northern England. The Pier Head is dominated by the Three Graces — the Royal Liver Building, the Cunard Building and the Port of Liverpool Building — three monumental early-20th-century structures that together form one of the great civic ensembles in Britain. They are the architectural face of Liverpool's days as the second city of the British Empire.

The promenade runs along the Mersey from the Pier Head south to the Albert Dock. Statues of Billy Fury, the Beatles and an Edward VII equestrian dot the route. The Mersey Ferry terminal is here too — the iconic Snowdrop and Royal Iris ferries still cross to Birkenhead and Seacombe, and the 50-minute round trip is a Liverpool classic.

A story
When the Royal Liver Building opened in 1911 it was the tallest storied building in Europe and one of the first in the world built using reinforced concrete. The two Liver Birds on top — Bella facing the sea, Bertie facing the city — are mythical creatures invented for the city; legend says if they ever fly away, Liverpool will cease to exist.
