St Luke's (Bombed-Out Church)

Roofless 1831 church preserved as a war memorial and event space

Address Berry Street, Liverpool, L1 4JG

The shell of St Luke's Church, gutted by a German firebomb on the night of 5 May 1941 and deliberately left as a permanent memorial to those who died in the Liverpool Blitz. The neogothic walls and tower are intact; the roof, pews and interior are gone, replaced by an open-air courtyard with grass, trees and pop-up bars.

Today the bombed-out church is used for film screenings, gigs, exhibitions, weddings and street food markets. There is a permanent peace garden in what was the nave. It sits at the top of Bold Street and is one of the more atmospheric corners of the city centre, especially at dusk.
