Hope Street

Georgian street linking the two cathedrals — one of England's finest

Address Hope Street, Liverpool, L1 9BG

The grand Georgian artery connecting the two cathedrals — the Anglican at the south end and the Metropolitan at the north — through the heart of Liverpool's Georgian Quarter. It is one of the finest streetscapes in the city, lined with red-brick townhouses, the Philharmonic Hall, the Everyman Theatre and the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts (founded by Paul McCartney in his old school).

The street itself is named not for the theological virtue but for William Hope, an 18th-century merchant who owned the land. Public art along its length includes Antony Gormley-style suitcases ("A Case History"), commemorating Liverpool's history of emigration. The walk between the two cathedrals takes about 15 minutes.
