Royal Liver Building

1911 waterfront icon topped by the mythical Liver Birds

Address Pier Head, Liverpool, L3 1HU

The middle and most famous of the Three Graces, completed in 1911 by Walter Aubrey Thomas for the Royal Liver Assurance group. At 90 metres it was the tallest building in Britain at the time of completion and a pioneering use of reinforced concrete on such a scale. The two clock faces are larger than Big Ben's.

The Liver Birds — copper sculptures by Carl Bernard Bartels, a German immigrant who was later interned during the First World War — perch on the twin towers. There are guided tours up to the top of the building, with a 360-tour film and access to a viewing platform between the two towers; book in advance.
