Superlambanana

Bright yellow half-lamb half-banana sculpture, now a Liverpool icon

Address Tithebarn Street, Liverpool, L2 2DT

A 17-foot-tall, bright yellow sculpture that is exactly what its name suggests: half banana, half lamb. Created by the Japanese artist Taro Chiezo in 1998 for the ArtTransPennine exhibition, it was conceived as a satirical comment on genetic engineering and on Liverpool's port history — the city's docks once received both lambs (in vast numbers) and bananas.

The original Superlambanana stands outside the Museum of Liverpool, with various smaller replicas dotted around the city. In 2008, during the European Capital of Culture year, 125 painted "miniature" Superlambananas were installed across the region as a public art trail. It has been adopted as one of the city's unofficial mascots.
