Strawberry Field

Salvation Army site that inspired John Lennon's song

Address Beaconsfield Road, Liverpool, L25 6EJ

A former Salvation Army children's home in Woolton, a few hundred metres from John Lennon's childhood home, made famous by the 1967 Beatles song "Strawberry Fields Forever." The Salvation Army opened a small visitor centre on the site in 2019, with a permanent exhibition on Lennon's connection to the place and a peaceful walled garden.

The site is run as a working community project supporting young people with learning disabilities. There's a small cafe and shop, and entry to the exhibition is by ticket. The famous red gates outside are now a pilgrimage spot for Beatles fans, often covered in graffiti and tributes.

A story
Lennon grew up in nearby Menlove Avenue and used to climb the wall of the Strawberry Field children's home to play in the gardens; he later wrote that going there was an escape from his unhappy childhood. The original red gates have been replaced by a replica — the originals are in the visitor centre.
