Museum of Liverpool

The city's own story, from prehistory to the present

Address Pier Head, Liverpool, L3 1DG

A striking modern building on the Pier Head waterfront, opened in 2011, dedicated to the social, urban and cultural history of Liverpool. The galleries cover everything from the city's pre-industrial fishing village origins to the rise of the port, the music and football of the 20th century, and the contemporary city.

The displays are well done and pitched at a general audience. Particular highlights include the gallery devoted to Liverpool's place in 1960s pop culture, and the section on the city's diverse communities — Irish, Welsh, Chinese, West African, Yemeni — all of which have shaped the city. Free admission.
