Cavern Club

Cellar club where the Beatles played 292 times before world fame

Address 10 Mathew Street, Liverpool, L2 6RE

The most famous music venue in the world by reputation, the Cavern is a tight, brick-arched cellar on Mathew Street where the Beatles cut their teeth as a working bar band. Brian Epstein walked in to see them play here on 9 November 1961 and signed them a few weeks later. The current club, opened in 1984 and expanded since, sits on most of the original footprint with bricks from the demolished 1957 cellar.

It still runs live music seven days a week — Beatles tribute acts on the main stage, original bands and indie acts on the back stage. The Beatles statue on Mathew Street and the Wall of Fame opposite list every act that has played here. Free entry most afternoons; small charge for evening gigs.

A story
The current Cavern is a faithful reconstruction built on most of the original site after the 1973 demolition — using bricks salvaged from the rubble. The Beatles played here 292 times between 1961 and 1963; the last gig, on 3 August 1963, came just weeks before they conquered America.
