Bourda Cricket Ground

Historic Test cricket ground, the only one below sea level

Home to the Georgetown Cricket Club since 1884, Bourda hosted West Indies Test matches from 1930 until 2006, when Test cricket in Guyana moved to the larger Providence Stadium outside the city. Bourda still hosts regional first-class cricket and is one of the great atmospheric grounds in the Caribbean, with wooden stands, a chattering crowd, and rum vendors working the boundary.

The ground is on Regent Street, an easy walk from the centre. If there is a match on during your visit, even a low-stakes one, go. Tickets are cheap and the local cricket culture is something you have to see in person to understand.

A story
Bourda is the only Test cricket venue in the world below sea level. Its outfield is protected by a system of drainage canals dug by the Dutch in the eighteenth century, and matches have occasionally been delayed by flooding when the canals overflow.
