St. George's Cathedral

One of the world's tallest wooden buildings, Gothic and grand

One of the largest wooden churches in the world and one of the tallest wooden buildings anywhere, this Anglican Gothic cathedral was completed in 1899 and rises 43 metres above North Road. The interior is cool and quiet even on the hottest days, with stained glass windows and a vaulted wooden ceiling. The structure is remarkable for its scale — it is hard to believe it is built entirely of native timber.

A story
At 43 metres, St. George's is often cited as the tallest wooden church in the world. The structure is built from native Guyanese greenheart, a tropical hardwood so dense and resistant to rot that the cathedral has needed remarkably little structural work in its first century and a quarter.
