Brickdam Cathedral

Concrete Catholic cathedral on Brickdam, replacing one lost to fire

Formally the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Brickdam Cathedral is the seat of the Catholic Archdiocese of Georgetown. The current concrete building dates from 1931 and replaced an earlier wooden cathedral that, like so much else in Georgetown, was lost to fire. Compared with St. George's Cathedral nearby, it is plain and modern, but the interior is cool and quiet and the stained glass is worth a look.

The cathedral sits on Brickdam, one of the broad colonial-era avenues that runs parallel to the main canals. The area around it includes the old Sacred Heart Church ruins from the 2004 fire — a stark reminder of how vulnerable Georgetown's historic buildings remain.
