A purpose-built theatre and concert hall on Mandela Avenue, the National Cultural Centre is the venue for most of Georgetown's major performing arts events — plays, classical concerts, the annual Mashramani celebrations, and visiting international acts. It seats around 2,000 and was built in 1976 with technical assistance from the United Kingdom.
The building itself is a brutalist concrete block that has aged better outside than inside, though acoustics in the main hall are good. Check the programme: a performance here, particularly during Mashramani season in February, is one of the best ways to experience contemporary Guyanese culture beyond the standard tourist circuit.
