Despite its grand name, this is an urban park rather than a national park in the conservation sense. Opened in 1965 in the presence of Queen Elizabeth II, it sits between Camp Road and Carifesta Avenue near the seawall and is the largest open green space in the city after the Botanic Gardens. Joggers, cyclists, and families fill it in the early morning and at dusk.
There is a small recreational complex inside the grounds, including a swimming pool and a few sports facilities. It is also the venue for the annual Republic Day flag-raising and other state ceremonies. Pleasant for a walk if you are already in the neighbourhood, not a destination in itself.
