Non-Aligned Monument

Cold War-era monument honouring leaders of the Non-Aligned Movement

A small but historically interesting monument on Company Path Avenue, the Non-Aligned Monument was erected by the Forbes Burnham government to honour the founders of the Non-Aligned Movement — Tito of Yugoslavia, Nehru of India, Nasser of Egypt, and Nkrumah of Ghana. Their busts stand on a low concrete plinth, slightly weathered, beneath a plane tree.

Burnham positioned Guyana firmly within the Non-Aligned Movement during the Cold War, and the monument is a reminder of an era when small post-colonial nations attempted to chart a course between the superpowers. It is a quiet, slightly forgotten spot that rewards a brief look.
