Red House

Wooden colonial residence turned museum to Cheddi Jagan

A handsome two-storey wooden colonial residence painted entirely in red, the Red House on High Street served as the official residence of Cheddi Jagan, the dentist-turned-politician who led Guyana toward independence and served as both Premier of British Guiana and President of independent Guyana. The building now houses the Cheddi Jagan Research Centre.

The exhibits document Jagan's career, his role in the Cold War struggles over the colony, and the long political battle between him and Forbes Burnham that shaped post-independence Guyana. The building itself, a classic example of late-Victorian tropical architecture with its wide verandahs and double-pitched roof, is reason enough to visit.
