The official residence of the President of Guyana, State House occupies an extensive walled compound on Main Street. The main building is a large nineteenth-century wooden mansion in classic Demerara colonial style, raised on stilts with broad verandahs and a corrugated iron roof. It served as the residence of the British colonial governors before independence.
Public access is restricted, but the building is visible from Main Street outside the perimeter wall and is worth a look while walking through the area. The surrounding gardens occasionally host receptions and state events.
