Promenade Gardens

Small Victorian botanical garden between Middle and New Garden Streets

A small but carefully maintained Victorian garden on Middle Street, dating from 1851. The Promenade Gardens were originally laid out for European residents as a private pleasure garden and opened to the public in 1857. They contain a bandstand, ornamental ponds, a fountain, and a small monument to the workers killed during the 1905 riots over wage cuts on the sugar estates.

Smaller and tidier than the Botanic Gardens, the Promenade is a pleasant lunchtime spot in central Georgetown. Concerts are occasionally held at the bandstand. Entry is free.
