Although usually grouped with the Public Buildings, the Parliament chamber is worth singling out. It occupies the central hall of the colonial Public Buildings on Brickdam and meets here for the country's National Assembly. The chamber retains its original mahogany benches, ornate woodwork, and the painted royal coat of arms above the speaker's chair — still in place despite Guyana becoming a republic in 1970.
Tours can be arranged through the Parliament Office, particularly when the Assembly is not sitting. If you visit during a parliamentary session, the public gallery is open and the proceedings are conducted in a formal British style that contrasts sharply with the tropical setting outside.
