Demerara Harbour Bridge

Floating pontoon bridge across the Demerara River

A 1.85-kilometre floating pontoon bridge across the broad Demerara River, opened in 1978 and one of the longest of its kind in the world. The bridge is a constant background to Georgetown life — it carries the only road link between the capital and the country's western regions, including the route to Bartica and the airport at Timehri. Twice a day a section of the bridge swings open to let larger ships through, generating spectacular traffic jams on either side.

A new fixed bridge is planned to replace it, after which the floating bridge will likely be dismantled. Worth a look while it lasts. The eastern landing point is in the village of Peter's Hall, a short taxi ride from central Georgetown.
