Independence Arch

Modernist arch on Brickdam marking independence from Britain

A simple modernist concrete arch on Brickdam, the Independence Arch was erected to mark Guyana's independence from Britain in 1966. The single span has weathered into something quietly dignified, and the surrounding plaza is often used for political rallies and public gatherings.

It is a one-minute stop rather than a sight in its own right, but pleasant to combine with a walk along the Brickdam canal, taking in the Public Buildings and the line of nineteenth-century government offices on either side.
