Tucked into a corner of the Botanic Gardens, the Guyana Zoological Park is a modest place that focuses on animals native to the Guianas — jaguars, harpy eagles, giant anteaters, manatees in the adjacent ponds, and a respectable collection of macaws and parrots. The enclosures are old and the conservation messaging is patchy, but it remains the easiest way in Georgetown to see species you would otherwise need a flight into the interior to encounter.
Combine it with a walk around the Botanic Gardens. Mornings are best — by midday the animals are dozing and the heat in the open enclosures is uncomfortable. Entry is inexpensive, paid in Guyana Dollars at the gate.
