The Cave of John the Baptist

This rock-cut cistern in the Jerusalem Hills was first used for water storage, then as a Jewish ritual bath, and later became associated with Christian pilgrimage to John the Baptist. The carved walls and layered history make it a compact but unusual archaeological stop west of Jerusalem.
