Gehinnom is the valley below the western side of the Old City, a place whose grim biblical associations eventually gave its name to Gehenna, a word later linked with hell. The valley was traditionally associated with child sacrifice, which explains the dark reputation.
Today it is a green walking route rather than a frightening place. It is worth knowing the story before you go, because the quiet path sits under some of Jerusalem's heaviest layers of religious memory.
