L.A. Mayer Museum for Islamic Art

Named after the Hebrew University scholar Leo Aryeh Mayer, this intimate museum in the Katamon neighborhood houses a superb collection of Islamic art spanning 1,400 years and stretching from Spain to India. Ceramics, textiles, jewelry, illuminated manuscripts, swords, and antique chess sets fill the galleries. The museum's most unexpected treasure is its collection of rare antique watches and clocks, famously stolen in a dramatic 1983 heist that included the legendary "Marie Antoinette" pocket watch, later recovered. The combination of world-class Islamic decorative arts and this quirky horological collection makes it unlike any other museum in the city. It's small enough to see in an hour.
