Jamek Mosque

KL's oldest mosque, built in 1907 at the confluence of the Gombak and Klang rivers

Masjid Jamek stands at the spot where Kuala Lumpur began -- the confluence of the Gombak and Klang rivers. Built in 1909 by British architect Arthur Benison Hubback, the mosque draws on Mughal style with its striped onion domes, minarets, and colonnaded prayer halls. For decades it served as the city's main mosque before the National Mosque took over that role in 1965.

The surrounding grounds were redesigned in 2017 as the River of Life project, adding illuminated fountains and a landscaped plaza along the riverbanks. The mosque is open to visitors outside prayer times, and modest dress coverings are available at the entrance. At night the building is beautifully lit, and the view from the pedestrian bridge over the Klang is one of the best free sights in KL.
